Ombre Trend in Weddings

om·bré (äm′brā′, äm brā′): shaded or graduated in tone: said of a color.

One of the best things about this time of year is looking forward to Spring. One cant help but smile at runways filled with colorful Spring inspiration and brides-to-be planning their upcoming warm-weather nuptials. With the popularity of ombre in fashion it’s no wonder it transfers seamlessly into weddings. It’s slow but dramatic contrast gives a feeling of both symmetry and asymmetry. It leads the eye from the barely-there, airy lights to rich, deep saturation of darks.

Ombre is seen as the more sophisticated and elegant version of tie-dye and can be seen in fashion from casual wear to couture gowns as well as in beauty, accessories, and even food. Whether you’re looking to incorporate splashes of bright colors or sheer washes in your wedding and don’t know quite how to display or incorporate this trend, feast on the following examples for a spectrum of inspiration.

With it’s beautiful watercolor effect achieved with florals, you can incorporate your favorite flower in a range of colors using this gradation technique. It’s also a fantastic way to stay within your floral budget since you are able to achieve lush designs using one flower in a variety of colors. For example, the strawflowers used in the above centerpiece and garland are economical and last a very long time because of their texture and still create a lush aesthetic.

Martha never disappoints when it comes to setting trends, including cakes. This lovely example of a wash of peach flatters a tiered cake perfectly. Add texture, seen here with the use of gum paste petals, to enhance the look and make it a piece of art for everyone to enjoy.

Fashion has a wide range of the use of ombre, making it that much easier to gather inspiration. There’s something for everyone, it can be textural and dramatic on feathered skirts, like this couture gown from Givenchy’s Fall 2010 collection or elegant and romantic as seen at Monique Lhuillier’s pre-Fall 2011 collection that would make for a captivating bridesmaid gown.

I have to admit I’m a huge fan of Gwen Stefani, and when I saw her custom-made pink Galliano ombre wedding dress back in 2002 it just blew me away. She has that certain style that you just can’t quite put your finger on, mostly because it’s always evolving and I love that. From then on it set the standard for the use of color mixed with classic and traditional features to create an anything-but-ordinary wedding gown.

Most recently the Secretary of State and mother-of-the-bride, Hilary Clinton, wore a stunning purple floral ombre gown designed by long-time friend, Oscar de la Renta for her daughter Chelsea’s wedding. This versatile trend can easily be translated into different styles, tastes, and occasions.

Ombre hair has swept Tinsel Town, everyone from Ashlee Simpson to Sarah Jessica Parker have rocked this look. All though to some it may look like overly outgrown roots, it has become a go-to style in salons everywhere. This hair trend is a great way to transition your darker Winter/Fall hair color to a lighter Spring look.

I’ve personally worn my hair this way and loved it. The gradient can range from dark brown at the roots to a bright blonde at the ends a la Drew Barrymore or a more natural transition to caramel as well. This look shines with tousled waves and a center part or messy braid. Thinking about wearing this trend on your wedding day? Let your roots grow out and skip the salon this month to see if you can handle this hair trend.

Not totally committed to this trend? A great temporary way to add a little ombre fun to your big day is to wear it on your fingertips. Pick one of your wedding colors and have a manicure party with your bridesmaids. Your manicurist can add black or white to your original chosen color to create a gradient across your digits, like the photo above.

Do you think you will be using this trend for your Spring or Summer wedding?
