When catching up with my Twitter friends this morning, I caught sight of some terrible news: fashion designer Alexander McQueen died of suicide at the age of 40.
This is particularly heartbreaking for many reasons – one of which is the fact that I wore McQueen on my wedding day. My reception/dancing shoes were a pair of much adored Alexander McQueen black and white striped satin slingbacks from a few seasons back. They were a little bit rockstar and a little bit black tie – absolutely perfect for me and I knew I would wear them again.
I’m sitting here at my office, in my black Cole Haan flat boots, wishing I had swapped them out for my wedding day shoes – sure, they’re a bit formal for a business casual office and not exactly winter-friendly, but today I don’t think it would’ve mattered.
Alexander McQueen is best known for his edgy chiffon skull scarves and his amazingly edgy runway collections worn by the likes of Lady Gaga, eclectic heiress Daphne Guinness and many other celebrities like Cameron Diaz, Olivia Wilde, Camilla Belle, Anna Paquin, Sandra Bullock, Beyonce, and Rihanna. If I could have worn his Oyster Dress as a wedding gown, I would have died and gone to heaven.
RIP Alexander McQueen.
He was a visionary! This is a great loss to the fashion world, but those of us who wore him well will remember him as an icon, always.
